UEFA Champions League Semifinals Leg 1 reports: Atkinson and Rizzoli take center stage

Juventus 2-1 Real Madrid                        Referee: Martin Atkinson (England)
Only one call in this game to go in depth on and it was a big one.
57th Minute: Daniel Carvajal tries a last ditch effort to stop a break by Carlos Tévez but ends up tripping him up. Atkinson is right on the scene and correctly points to the spot. Good decision by Atkinson, but he probably could have gone with a yellow card to Carvajal as well.
Overview: There were a couple areas Atkinson could have improved on, such as consistency with discipline, but he put in a solid performance without any glaring mistakes. I also have to give his assistants credit too, since both the 1-0 and 1-1 goals were very tight onsides calls.

Barcelona 3-0 Bayern Munich                 Referee: Nicola Rizzoli (Italy)
Nothing to go in depth on.
Overview: Rizzoli was excellent overall in this match. He maybe missed a foul here and there, but most of the things I have to say are in praise of his performance. His best call of the night in my opinion was the advantage right before the 3-0 goal. His assistants also deserve credit for a couple very good onside calls on 2 Barcelona chances. Overall, this game showed why Rizzoli was the World Cup Final Referee.
